Fashion Week 2011: Mazuba’s African Fashion Night Out

Last Thursday night, the city that never sleeps was filled with thousands of fashion inclined people who took to the numerous stores, celebrating the third annual Fashion Night Out. Having missed the first two years of FNO, I was determined not to miss this one!

My first stop was the Dash store in Soho. Upon turning onto Spring Street, I was greeted by a crowd of shoppers desperate to catch a glimpse of Kim and Kourtney Kardashian. Upon waiting for twenty minutes, we were informed that the Kardashians had already left the store. The crowd then turned their attention to Pauly D, who emerged half an hour later and was quickly rushed into a waiting vehicle, much to the disappointment of the crowd.

Next stop was the Nicole Miller event which was held in partnership with social enterprise company Indego Africa. Miller debuted her new collection with the brand which was a collection of bold Ankara (African Print) bags. Meeka Claxton of Basketball Wives fame was spotted checking out the totes. Other Indego Africa goodies on sale included my personal favorite Nicole Miller Textile and woven bracelets and which are bold, colorful and perfect for fall. The best thing about the accessories as well as all of Indego Africa products is that they are hand-made by women in Rwanda and each product features the name of the woman who made it for a personal touch. The $65 print shorts and skirts caught my eye and shopping assistants were on hand to convince me to purchase a pair.

Fashion Night Out is not complete without food and drinks, and plenty of stores provided the latter such as Molton Brown, who had a photographer on hand to create fun window photo shoots. In need of a full meal, I headed to Ethiopian –American celebrity chef Marcus Samuelson’s Street Food Pop up store at Lincoln Center where I feasted on one of my favorite meals Dorowot (chicken stew). Food met fashion with a meet and greet featuring Haitian designer Praaje Jean Baptiste who showed his Praaje 1983 Spring 2012 collection at Lincoln Center and will show at Boston Fashion Week. I also spied Tasha Smith of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I get Married” films in attendance. Stay tuned for more upcoming Fashion Week adventures!!
