The Sleeper

A few months ago a friend of mine introduced me to the song “Words” by Anthony David featuring India.Arie. “Words” blew me away. It may be the best song of the year that most people haven’t even heard. “Words” is one of those songs that I instantly fell in love with. I played it over and over again in the mornings when everything else is still, quiet and pure. From the moment the piano keys start to plunk, it was clear that this is real soul music. You can feel it. The lyrics are poignant in their sheer simplicity and double entendres especially in these days of uncertainty. But it is the raspy and gravely sound of David’s voice that is more powerful than the words.

India.Arie’s textured voice is the perfect musical companion to David’s. The duo lyrically dance over the track. It’s almost like they are making sonic love. David is a song writer who has written for Arie’s Grammy nominated Acoustic Soul and toured with the neo-soul siren. They are also good friends. It was only fitting that David, who has produced two independent albums on his own, released his current album Acey Deucy on Arie’s Soulbird Music a venture with Universal Republic Records. The album was released on June 24.

Well if you haven’t heard Anthony David’s “Words” I encourage you to do so after reading this blog. It may be the sleeper of the year, but it is starting to make some noise.  “Words” was just nominated for a 2008 Grammy for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. And if that is not enough First Lady Elect Michelle Obama recently told Marie Claire magazine that David’s music was on her iPod. Clearly somebody is listening. Check it out…
