The city of Chicago is a place made famous by the Italian mobsters of the past. Al Capone’s actions have become as ingrained in the city’s fabric as much as taking in a Chicago Cubs baseball game. Though many famous citizens of Chicago have denounced the violence taking place, Chicago’s murder rate continues to be at an all time high.
Recent signee to Rick Ross‘ Maybach Music Group, Rockie Fresh, knows about the danger young teens face living in the windy city. Born on the South Side of the city, Rockie has seen some of his closest friends murdered for ridiculous reasons. However, Rockie chose to stay out of the streets and make music. 2009 marked the year he began releasing his own independent mnixtapes, starting with the acclaimed “Rockie’s Modern Life.” In a sense, music saved his life. He could have been one of the young teens killed over nothing more than a dirty look.
When Rockie sat down for his interview, we asked him how he fit into the Maybach Music Group stable of artists and what we got was a response that commented on the senseless violence that happens in Chicago everyday. His point of people getting murdered everyday was highlighted by the fact fellow Chicago MC Chief Keef laughed when he found out a rival rapper Lil JoJo was gunned down recently. We have got to do better.
