Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Smokey’s Hotlist. This week I’m bringing you my all time favorite scenes in Black films. It was hard combing through my catalogue, but I narrowed it down to eight scenes in eight films that still provoke me in some way. Check out my list and don’t forget to Tweet me your favorites @smokey.

    1-Purple Rain

It’s not a proper Smokey hotlist without Prince. Kicking off the list at number one is Purple Rain. There were several iconic scenes, but I loved the biracial girl on the back of the motorcycle with the fierce leather outfit jumping into the lake. How sexy is that?

    2- Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee has to be on the list. No Question! 1989’s Do The Right Thing is a classic film with classic lines. But the scene where Mookie goes back to the pizza shop and picks up the money being thrown is excellent. “Make that money. Get paid!” You can’t beat it.

    3-The Color Purple

“Until you do right by me, everything you think about is going to crumble!” Powerful words from Academy Award winner, Whoopi Goldberg in 1985’s The Color Purple. That one scene, where she stands up to  Danny Glover is filled with intensity. That’s a Black woman empowerment scene that still stands today.

    4-Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssssss Song

One of the best Black exploitation films ever. Sweet Sweetback Badassssss Song was released in 1971 by Melvin Van Peebles who wrote, produced, directed and starred in the film.  This movie is iconic on all levels but when Peebles is running from the cops, ducking and diving and he finally gets away. It’s great to see the black man win.

If you haven’t seen Mahogany you’re losing. Diana Ross and Billie D. “Cooler Than The Other Side of The Pillow”  Williams star in one of the best Black love movies. When Diana Ross, is all decked out in her white fur and yells “I want you to get me my old man back” and they run in the crowd and kiss. It gets me every time.

    6-Training Day

Denzel Washington gives an electrifying performance as a dirty L.A. cop in Training Day. His acting was so phenomenal it was difficult to choose just one scene. But at the very end of the movie, Denzel is in the crowd, bloody and bruised and yells “King Kong ain’t got sh*t on me!” How can you not love that?

    7-Killer of Sheep

This film is in the National Archive and rightfully so. I could go on for days about Killer of Sheep and how important a film this is, but the scene I love the most is the dance scene. It’s heartfelt, sad and depicts the ups and downs of Black love.

We had to put a comedy on the list, and there’s no better comedy than Friday. This classic movie starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker is filled with jokes and memorable scenes. But you know what my favorite scene is, don’t you? “Stop looking at that girl’s booty.”

These were my favorites, tell me some of yours. Tweet me @smokey.
